College of American Pathologists Laboratory

Meeting the highest standards

The Department of Laboratory Services is accredited every two years by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Last accredited in September 2005, the department is part of an exclusive group of more than 6,000 laboratories worldwide that have met CAP's highest standards of excellence.

Laboratory Services performs a comprehensive array of tests, including chemistry, hematology and pathology, for all inpatients and most outpatients.

To maintain its high degree of quality, Laboratory Services participates in CAP proficiency testing. On a quarterly basis, CAP sends unmarked samples to Laboratory Services for testing and evaluation. The results are scored and compared with those of other hospitals.

The goal of the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program is to improve patient safety by advancing the quality of pathology and laboratory services through education, setting standards and ensuring that laboratories meet or exceed regulatory requirements.
