A message from our leaders

Changing Lives Every Day is the hallmark of our nursing profession. It's the reason why we chose it as our theme for this year's nursing annual report. Our stories profile the impact nurses made in advancing patient care and service across The University of Kansas Health System. Every day, our nurses make personal connections with their patients. We often receive cards and letters from patients who tell us how much they appreciate our nurses' expertise in care and compassion. Patients also tell us how they felt they were the only patient in the world when their nurse was in the room. This type of care and the nurses who provide it are the reason we are changing lives every day.

We achieved many milestones this year. Aug. 26, 2016, was a historic day across our health system, as we received Magnet® designation for the third time. We are one of only 8 percent of healthcare organizations to achieve this designation. Even fewer have been designated three times or more. We have been committed to the Magnet journey since 2002 because it is the right thing to do for our hospital, our nursing staff, and most importantly, our patients. We remain on this journey because it makes us better: a better place for patients to receive care; a system better able to support the needs of our communities; and a better environment for nursing professionals to advance their skills. And because of this journey, we are changing lives every day.

We are excited to celebrate our accomplishments from last year with you. This is also an opportunity to renew our purpose for choosing nursing as our profession so we may continue changing lives every day.

To our nurses and staff, thank you for choosing to dedicate your passion and skills to the care of our patients. You work every day to improve the way care is delivered, not just here but across the country. Because of you, we are helping sustain a culture of excellence, which is changing lives every day.
