All are board-certified in general surgery and are fellows of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Meet our bariatric surgeons

Bernita Berntsen, MD, FACS
Dr. Berntsen is board-certified in general surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. She completed additional training in gastrointestinal laparoscopic surgery, breast surgery and bariatric surgery. She specializes in all aspects of general and minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Berntsen is from La Harpe, Kansas, and is a graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine where she completed her surgical residency.

Carlyle M. Dunshee II, MD, FACS
Dr. Dunshee is board-certified in general surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He is also a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Dunshee is from Fort Scott, Kansas, and is a graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He completed his surgical residency at East Carolina University where he received the “Outstanding Resident in Training” award.

James J. Hamilton Jr., MD, FACS
Dr. Hamilton is board-certified in general surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He is from western Kansas and is a graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He completed his surgical residency at Harvard Medical School and furthered his training in vascular surgery at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. Dr. Hamilton also completed a fellowship in liver surgery at the University of Bern, Switzerland.

Sidney Hu, MD
Dr. Hu is board-certified in general surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. She received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from the University of Kansas and earned her medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Dr. Hu completed her residency in general surgery at the University of Missouri Health Care in Columbia, Missouri.

Jennifer McAllaster, MD, FACS
Dr. McAllaster is board-certified in general surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas and her medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Dr. McAllaster completed her residency in general surgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.
