ACLS Initial Provider & Reaffirmation

Note: ACLS courses also include BLS Healthcare Provider. You may opt out of BLS, but must complete Adult CPR testing. To opt out of BLS contact Education and Development.

Course description

This is an instructor-led class. Successful completion requires active participation in the class, passing Adult and Infant CPR Skills and Rescue Breathing Testing, successful completion of a Megacode as Team Leader and passing the written test at a minimum of 84%.

Location

This class is held in the Westwood Multipurpose Room.

Course times

  • 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. for Provider Day 1
  • 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. for Provider Day 2 and Reaffirmation

Please note: BLS testing may be started prior to 7:30 a.m.

Preparation

To be admitted to the course you must have:

  • An ACLS manual.
  • Proof of pretest completion. The ACLS Pretest is required for admission to the course. The pretest may be found at heart.org/eccstudent. Enter the password acls15 to start the pretest. Achievement of 80% on the pretest is required for admission to the course.
  • Proof* of ACLS Prep completion.
  • Proof* of BLS Heartcode Online completion.

Study strategy prior to the course:

  • Complete all of the admission requirements.
  • Read the ACLS manual.
  • Know the ACLS algorithms (Bradycardia, Tachycardia, Pulseless Arrest & ROSC).
  • Know the reversible causes of dysrhythmias (Hs & Ts).
  • Know doses and indications of the IV push medications (adenosine, amiodarone, atropine, epinephrine & vasopressin).

Study strategy after the course:

  • Review course material periodically.
  • Participate in mock codes on your unit.

Pretest

The ACLS Pretest is required for admission to the course. The pretest may be found at heart.org/eccstudent. Enter the password acls15 to start the pretest. An 80% achievement level is recommended.

Continuing Education for Registered Nurses

ACLS HCP Initial Provider – 12.25 hours

ACLS HCP Reaffirmation – 4.75 hours

The University of Kansas Health System Education and Development is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

ACLS Heartcode Online

Course description

This is an online program with skills testing for BLS and ACLS skills. You will be given an access key to BLS Heartcode Online and ACLS Heartcode Online. There is an instructor-led skills validation for BLS and ACLS. Successful completion requires active participation in the skills validation, passing Adult and Infant CPR Skills and Rescue Breathing Testing and successful completion of a Megacode as Team Leader.

Location

This class is held in the Westwood Multipurpose Room.

Course times

  • 5 p.m.-finish

Large groups may take up to 3 hours to complete all testing.

Online program

Please allow time to finish the program. ACLS takes approximately 6-8 hours to complete. Do not first access the program on a weekend as the AHA Help Desk is closed.

Continuing Education for Registered Nurses

The American Heart Association awards up to 9.75 CNEs for ACLS Heartcode. Access Heartcode Part 1 to acquire the continuing education credits.

The University of Kansas Health System Education and Development does not provide CNEs for BLS and ACLS Heartcode.
