Training Center Policies

Instructors:

  • The Training Site agrees to maintain a pool of instructors in sufficient numbers for the AHA courses offered.
    • All AHA courses shall be taught by qualified and current AHA instructors and content experts as allowed by AHA policy.
    • The ratio of students to instructors shall be no more than 8:1.
  • The Training Site shall maintain the records on aligned instructors in accordance with AHA policy:
    • Instructor name
    • Address
    • Employer
    • Contact information - including email
    • Discipline(s)
    • Agreement to align with training site
    • Completed exam for each discipline every two years
    • Completed skills evaluation(s) for each discipline every two years
    • Instructor monitoring by Training Center Faculty every two years
  • The Training Site Coordinator shall submit annually to the Training Center the following for each aligned instructor:
    • Name
    • Address
    • Email address
    • Discipline(s)
    • Number of courses taught per discipline
  • All records shall be maintained for a minimum of three years.

Courses:

  • Equipment:
    • The Training Site shall have available for AHA courses enough equipment to meet AHA policy.
    • The equipment shall be adequately maintained.
    • The student to mannequin ratio shall not exceed 3:1.
  • AHA course content:
    • AHA standards shall be taught within the courses.
    • Any content that does not reflect AHA standards shall be accompanied by the following:
      • The appropriate AHA standard for the topic.
      • A disclaimer that the content discussed does not comply with AHA standards.

Agendas:

  • Each AHA course shall have an agenda that follow AHA standards.
  • Agendas shall be filed for a minimum of three years.

AHA videos:

  • AHA videos shall be used in all AHA courses in accordance to AHA standards.

AHA course testing:

  • All testing within AHA courses shall be conducted according to AHA standards.

Remediation:

  • Any student who does not pass the written test or skills evaluation shall be offered remediation within 30 days of the course date in accordance with AHA standards.

Course record:

  • A record of each course taught shall be maintained with the following information:
    • Title of the course.
    • Date and time of the course (starting and end times).
    • Location of the course.
    • Lead instructor name and discipline(s).
    • Assisting instructor names(s) and discipline(s).
    • Number of registrants.
    • Number of registrants who attend the class.
    • Name of each registrant.
    • Student exam scores for each discipline.
    • Student skills evaluation(s) outcome (Pass/Fail) for each discipline.
    • Notation if a card was issued (Yes/No) for each discipline.
    • The original written test answer sheet for any student who did not pass the written test.
    • The original skills checklist for any student who did not pass the skills evaluation.
    • Notation of any remediation:
      • Remediation date and outcome.
      • Notation if a card was issued after remediation.
      • Notation of the action plan if the student does not pass the remediation.

Course evaluation:

  • All AHA courses shall be evaluated.
  • The evaluation shall include sections for each instructor.
  • A summary of each course evaluation shall be kept with the corresponding course record.
  • Original course evaluations from problematic classes (poor course evaluations) shall be kept with the corresponding course record.

All records shall be maintained for a minimum of three years.

The Training Site Coordinator shall annually submit a report to the Training Center containing the number of courses taught per discipline.

Security

AHA tests, test keys and cards shall be secured by the Training Site.

AHA tests and test keys:

  • All AHA test and test keys shall be secured in a locked area when not in use.
  • All disposed AHA tests, test keys and completed answer sheets shall be shredded and properly disposed.

AHA course cards:

  • All blank AHA course cards shall be secured in a locked area when not in use.
  • The name of the Training Center, Training Center number, instructor name and AHA instructor number shall be printed on the back of the card.
  • Cards may be purchased from The University of Kansas Health System Training Center. Allow two weeks for orders of 300 cards or less and three weeks for orders over 300 cards. The fee for the cards shall be set by the Training Center.
  • All AHA cards shall be printed on a computer or typewriter.

Course Card Completion

  • All cards shall be printed per AHA standards except all cards shall be printed on the front and the back.
  • The only blank is the Student Signature line.
  • The name of the Training Site shall be listed as the Course Location.
  • The name and instructor number of the Training Site Coordinator may be used as the instructor. The alternative is the name and instructor number the lead instructor.
  • Any handwritten cards shall be deemed invalid.

Site Visits

A Training Center representative will visit each training site at least once every two years to ensure training site compliance with American Heart Association and Training Center policies and monitor AHA courses. The course evaluation form has critical elements that must be achieved for minimum compliance with AHA standards.
