KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The University of Kansas Health System has received another important award for its efforts to educate and support breastfeeding moms and lactation care.

The newest recognition is the IBCLC Care Award, which is from the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and the International Lactation Consultant Association. The award recognizes the work of lactation consultants across our health system.

Facilities that receive the award, according to the association, "have taken initiative to improve the overall health of their patients by making breastfeeding a priority and implementing lactation support programs."

Suzanne Bentley, DNP, a clinical nurse specialist, said the 17 lactation consultants across our organization include a nurse researcher, two nurse practitioner/lactation consultants and an inpatient team.

The inpatient team sees patients wherever lactating mothers and breastfeeding babies might be found, including inpatient Pediatric units, Labor-Delivery and Mother-Baby; and outpatient clinics such as Obstetrics-Gynecology, Family Medicine and Pediatrics, and their regularly scheduled appointments in the Lactation Clinic.

"We even go to operating rooms to assist mothers pump breast milk on the OR table, if they are in surgery for a long time," Bentley said.

She noted 13 of the 17-person team are board-certified, with the other four preparing to sit for the exam this fall.
