Major Traffic Disruption Starting Jan. 9

Kansas City, Kan. — As part of the hospital's Cambridge North Tower project, traffic on 39th Avenue and Cambridge Drive will be altered beginning Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016. This phase of construction is estimated to last through July. Take note of the traffic changes:


39th Avenue

  • Although traffic on 39th Avenue will remain two-way, it will be reduced to one lane each direction
  • Pedestrian traffic will also be detoured. Detour routes will be clearly marked. Ensure you follow detour signage
  • Access to the hospital's Emergency Department will not change. Employees, visitors and patients will be able to enter and exit the ED through the duration of construction.

Cambridge Drive and Cambridge Parking Garage

  • From 39th Avenue, Cambridge drive will consist of two lanes of southbound traffic only
  • From Olathe Boulevard, northbound traffic will be allowed to enter the Cambridge parking garage and access the Heart Hospital and Main Hospital drop-off via a U-turn on Cambridge.

Emergency Department

The Emergency Department at The University of Kansas Hospital is currently undergoing renovation. Phase 2 of construction will begin May 24, 2016. Expansion is expected to be completed in the fall.

Detour information

  • The east waiting area in the Heart Center will close permanently to all traffic.
  • The ED entrance through the east waiting area in the Heart Center will close. Access to the ED will be detoured through the Heart Center lobby.
  • ED parking will remain the same. The ED parking garage elevator will close. Access to the ED and security can be accessed from the Heart Center lobby.

Please follow all detour signage. With additional construction at the 39th Street and Cambridge intersection, allow for extra time for travel.

Weekend closures
  • Approximately six weekend closures will be necessary to install the pedestrian walkway, which will connect the Center for Advanced Heart Care across Cambridge to the Cambridge North Tower.
  • Weekend closures will require a complete shutdown from Fridays to Mondays on 39th Avenue to State Line, including access to Cambridge Drive.
  • Street closures will occur at noon on Fridays and reopen at 6 a.m. on Mondays.
General Safety Precautions
  • Safety is the top priority of hospital leadership and the Medical Center.
  • All driving and pedestrian detours will be clearly marked.
  • Pay close attention to signs, flagmen, and traffic during this timeSlowing down and allowing extra time to travel to and from the campus is advised.
