The University of Kansas Health System ranked nationally in 8 specialties on U.S. News & World Report's 2017-18 Best Hospitals List

Report Puts The University of Kansas Health System in the Top 10 of Academic Hospitals in the Country

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — In the most robust study of its kind of American academic hospitals, The University of Kansas Health System ranked 10th among 107 academic hospitals in quality and patient safety outcomes, and has received Vizient's 2017 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award. The award recognizes high performance in the areas of safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, equity and patient centeredness.

Vizient is a healthcare performance improvement organization whose members include the nation's leading academic medical centers and community hospitals.

Vizient rankings are widely considered the most comprehensive in healthcare because they are based entirely on objective data related to patient outcomes, regardless of insurance. Many other rankings consider only Medicare or Medicaid patient data, and others incorporate reputational scores. The Vizient rankings include data from all participating hospitals in the last fiscal year.

"The University of Kansas Health System should feel this ranking means they are doing excellent work, not just for this year but for many years," said Julie Cerese, group senior vice president of performance manage programs at Vizient. "It is always a challenge to consistently keep a high ranking, but I am sure the health system can do it."

Health system leaders said it is the comprehensive nature of the survey that makes it extremely respected among academic hospitals.

"We have earned the right to be spoken in the same sentence as the best of the best. We are convincing people there is something special happening in Kansas City. Employees want to work here. Physicians, nurses and allied health professionals want to come here. Patients want to come to us for their care," said Bob Page, president and chief executive officer of The University of Kansas Health System. "I will put The University of Kansas Health System up against any organization in the country in our ability to sustain quality of care."

Page noted the health system is one of the most consistent performers in the country for this quality and accountability study since it began 13 years ago.

"Every single person contributes to these honors throughout the organization. From the physicians, nurses and pharmacists to the transporter and respiratory therapist, remarkable care is provided every single day in our hospital and across our entire health care system," said Tammy Peterman, RN, MSN, executive vice president, chief operating officer and chief nursing officer of The University of Kansas Health System. "It's a way to compare ourselves to like organizations across the country in meeting the highest standards for quality and safety. Some of the very best care in health care takes place in academic medical centers. We are one of those and ranked number ten in the country."
