People who choose to undergo rhinoplasty often find that the procedure, which brings symmetry to their face, also improves their quality of life and self-confidence. Rhinoplasty can be performed to correct a range of nose size issues from a nose that is too large to a nose that is bumpy, crooked or drooped, in addition to correcting some breathing problems.

How is rhinoplasty performed?

The rhinoplasty procedure takes between one and three hours to perform and is generally performed under a local anesthesia with an intravenous sedation. If your plastic surgeon chooses a closed rhinoplasty, the incisions will be made inside your nose, while with an open procedure, the incision will be made under the tip of your nose, where the skin can be lifted for a view of the nasal structure. After your surgeon has made the chosen incision, your nasal bone and cartilage will be reshaped to bring the nose into balance. Sutures will be placed inside your nose and packing may be inserted to control bleeding.

What can I expect from recovery after rhinoplasty?

You can expect to return to your normal routine within two weeks, but may require pain medication during the first week of recovery. For the first six weeks, you should avoid activities that put your nose at risk for impact. Once the swelling has subsided, you should be able to appreciate your new nose. Ask your plastic surgeon about specific instructions for rhinoplasty aftercare and expected recovery time.

If you would like to learn more about the indications, costs, risks, benefits or expected outcome of rhinoplasty, the best setting to do so is in a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon. Men and women in the Kansas City area who are interested in rhinoplasty should contact the plastic surgery team to learn more about the procedure.
