Five Honored for Their Contributions to The University of Kansas Health System's Success

Published: 06/12/2018

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A distinguished group of Kansas City business leaders, philanthropists and supporters were honored with The University of Kansas Health System's highest honor on Tuesday, June 5. More than 350 guests were on hand to celebrate at the 8th annual Hall of Fame Dinner and Awards Celebration at the InterContinental Kansas City at The Plaza.

The Hall of Fame awards recognize the vital role individuals and organizations play in supporting the health system's ability to deliver world-class care to patients with the most complex conditions.

Legacy Award: Charlie Sunderland

Charlie Sunderland, chairman of Ash Grove Cement, was among the first of Kansas City's well-recognized, well-respected leaders to believe in what would become The University of Kansas Health System. Soon after joining the board of directors in 2000, he was asked to chair the quality committee. At the time, the organization was just beginning its focus on quality. Eighteen years later, Sunderland is the longest standing committee chair on the board – and the health system is recognized as one of the nation's top-quality healthcare leaders.

Catalyst Awards: The William H. Dunn, Sr. Family and Jeff, Mindy and Jordan Yowell

The Dunn family is grounded in serving others by generously sharing their time, expertise and financial resources. Time after time, their willingness to help has made all the difference – for the health system and most of all, for the patients. Most recently, their support helped make Bell Sanctuary a reality, providing a much-needed sacred space for patients, families and staff on the main campus.

Jeff, Mindy and Jordan Yowell are committed to ensuring people in our region will always have access to the best medicine has to offer. Jeff, president of JDY Inc., and Mindy, owner at My Core Pilates, LLC, involved their daughter, Jordan, 17, in their decision to make a significant unrestricted planned gift to the health system.

Partners in Excellence Awards: Global Prairie and LANE4 Property Group

Anne St. Peter, founder of Global Prairie, and her team have helped communicate the right message to the right people at the right time for every milestone in the health system's history. Whether it's adding a new hospital to our system, providing healthcare thought leadership with other executives throughout the country or celebrating another achievement, Global Prairie helps ensure our communication is on target.

For many years, rundown properties on the west side of Rainbow Boulevard across from the health system's main campus were a neighborhood eyesore. Where others saw neglect, LANE4 saw potential. Today LANE4 has created a vibrant business area with hotels, restaurants and more complementing the revitalization of our campus and the Rosedale neighborhood in Kansas City, Kansas.

"Our 2018 Hall of Fame honorees are leaders in their respective fields and families who are role models. They inspire us and help us achieve even more for our patients," said Bob Page, president and chief executive officer. "We are eternally grateful for their contributions to The University of Kansas Health System."
