Get Care Quickly for Sports Injuries Saturdays and Evenings

Sports medicine injury

July 27, 2021

Overland Park, Kan.Sports injuries often come at unexpected times, and packed schedules can make appointments difficult to come by. That’s why The University of Kansas Health System Sports Medicine and Performance Center is back with our Saturday morning walk-in clinic for sports injuries for fall 2021.

From August 28 to November 20, walk-in care will be available 8-11 a.m. Saturdays at our Sports Medicine and Performance Center located at 10730 Nall Ave., Suite 200, in Overland Park. Additionally, extended weekday hours allow you to make appointments with a physician until 7 p.m. Monday-Thursday for orthopedic injuries.

No appointment or referral is necessary for Saturday morning walk-ins. Patients will be treated on a first-come, first-serve basis by the same sports medicine experts who care for the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals.

"There are a lot of events on Thursday and Friday and sometimes athletes can’t come in during the week,” says David Smith, MD. “Saturday morning at 8 o’clock we’re waiting for them. We have an X-ray tech, a physician and clinical staff. And we can take care of almost any injury in that clinic, including concussions.”

On Saturdays, a sports medicine physician will evaluate, diagnose and treat most injuries, such as:

For other injuries and conditions, such as lacerations, open fractures, cast problems, chronic pain, wound care or back or neck issues, visit the emergency department or 1 of our other locations during regular business hours. Medication refills will be unavailable.

Orthopedic injuries do not need to be caused by sports in order to be seen. If needed, a follow-up appointment can be scheduled with the appropriate physician or therapist.

Dr. David Smith talks about walk-in and after-hours care at the Sports Medicine and Performance Center
Dr. David Smith: We started years ago thinking about the concept of "We got to be available for athletes almost all the time," and a lot of events occur on Friday night. Football games obviously, but we have other events that occur Thursday, Friday. And sometimes these young athletes can't get into our office during the week, or their parents are working, can't bring them to us. So we opened up a Saturday morning injury clinic, is what we call it. It's a walk-in clinic. You do not need an appointment. The goal is to take care of the athletes, or those that are exercising, not just a general clinic.

Walk-in appointments and extended hours

Our Saturday morning walk-in clinic is available for acute sports injuries, strains, sprains, joint injuries, bone fractures, dislocations and concussions. During the week, call to schedule an appointment Monday-Friday.
