The birth of your baby is a special event. We strive to bring you excellent evidenced-based, safe and family-centered maternity care in a comfortable, state-of-the-art setting.

Family-centered care

During pregnancy, labor and childbirth, you’ll find exceptional care that’s tailored to your physical, psychosocial, cultural, developmental and spiritual needs.

We provide family-centered care for the newest addition to your family. From the beginning, we encourage dads and other support persons to be part of the pregnancy and birth experience. Your family members can:
  • Participate in perinatal education for each step of pregnancy, from conception through postpartum and newborn care
  • Help make informed decisions about the mother and baby’s care during pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum
  • Be present during the entire hospital stay, including labor and birth
  • Care for your newborn
Your labor and birth care are provided in the same location, unless a Cesarean birth is necessary. When possible, postpartum and newborn care are also offered in the same location and by the same caregivers.

If your baby needs care in the neonatal intensive care unit, or NICU, you’ll have access to your newborn at all times and will be included in routine care whenever possible.

Family-centered delivery

Our new labor and delivery suites offer the region’s most advanced care for moms and babies in a spa-like setting.

Moms-to-be can schedule a tour of the unit by appointment or as part of a childbirth class. If you know your baby will need specialized or intensive care, your tour may include a look in the nearby NICU facilities. To schedule a tour, call 913-588-1227.

Suites are decorated in soothing earth tones, and they include windows with views of the Kansas City skyline. Large bathrooms feature spacious showers with room to sit during labor.

Families can stay together in the same room during labor, delivery and recovery.

Critical care for moms and babies

Whether you’re expecting a routine birth or know you may have problems, we are prepared. In just minutes, we can turn each suite into a critical care unit. Suites are right next to the operating room, too.

In the nearby NICU, experienced doctors and staff care for newborns who need special help.

Babies with special needs may need lifelong care. Here, they will find a medical home providing care from birth through adulthood.

The University of Kansas Medical Center’s expert team of physicians and nurses will be there to ensure the health and safety of you and your baby.
