Location

This class is held in the Westwood Multipurpose Room.

Course times

  • 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

Please note: BLS testing may be started prior to 7:30 a.m.

Preparation

To be admitted to the course you must have:

  • A PALS manual.
  • Proof* of pretest completion. Achievement of 80% on the pretest is required for admission to the course.

Study strategy prior to the course:

  • Complete all of the admission requirements.
  • Know the PALS Core Cases (Cardiac, Shock & Respiratory)
  • Know the reversible causes of dysrhythmias (Hs & Ts)
  • Know doses and indications of the IV push medications (adenosine, amiodarone, epinephrine).
  • Review the frequently asked questions.

Study strategy after the course:

  • Review course material periodically.
  • Participate in mock codes on your unit.

Pretest

The PALS Pretest is required for admission to the course. The pretest may be found at heart.org/eccstudent. Enter the password pals15 to start the pretest. An 80% achievement level is recommended.

Continuing Education for Registered Nurses

PALS HCP Initial Provider – 13 hours

PALS HCP Reaffirmation – 5 hours

The University of Kansas Health System Education and Development is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

PALS Heartcode Online

Course description

This is an online program with testing for CPR and PALS skills. You will be given an access key to PALS Heartcode Online. There is an instructor-led validation for PALS. Successful completion requires active participation in the class, passing Child and Infant CPR Skills Testing and success as a team leader of a shock or respiratory case and a cardiac case.

This class is held in the Westwood Multipurpose Room.

Course times

  • 4 p.m.-finish

Large groups may take up to 3 hours to complete the course.

To be admitted to the course you must have:

Online program

Please allow time to finish the program. PALS takes approximately 6-8 hours to complete. Do not first access the program on a weekend as the AHA Help Desk is closed.

Continuing Education for Registered Nurses

The American Heart Association awards up to 10 CNEs for PALS Heartcode. Access Heartcode Part 1 to acquire the continuing education credits.

The University of Kansas Health System Education and Development does not provide CNEs for PALS Heartcode.
