Cardiac Imaging

To diagnose and treat heart and vascular disease, doctors use many tools. This section describes the tools that involve images or pictures of your heart, arteries and veins and their activities.

We offer the most current imaging tests to meet your needs. Our doctors are leaders in the field. They are known for innovation. For example:

  • We are first in the region to use the new D-SPECT camera clinically.
    • It shortens the time of the test from 20 minutes to 8 minutes.
    • It cuts the amount of radiation you receive in half.
    • This camera also is better able to handle obese patients and patients who cannot bring their arms over their heads.
  • The D-SPECT is just one of the many ways our doctors are working to reduce the amount of radiation required for cardiac imaging.
  • Our high volume of echocardiograms sets us apart: We conducted 11,000 echo procedures in 2011.
  • We have 10 board-certified echocardiographers on staff and are always adding.

New zero-radiation cardiac MRI stress test

The University of Kansas Health System is pleased to tell you about its new cardiac MRI equipment. The new machine allows cardiac stress testing with no radiation. It also helps diagnose obese patients, who may have had problems with other tests.

    Advanced certification

    • All nuclear imaging labs are certified by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories.
    • Our nuclear technologists are certified in nuclear cardiology.
    • Our cardiac and vascular imaging specialists, called sonographers, are certified in echo and vascular imaging.
    • The cardiac and vascular ultrasound imaging labs are certified by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography and Vascular Laboratories.
