The Cystic Fibrosis Team

Adult Team
The mission of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Team at The University of Kansas Hospital is to grow old with our adult patients by providing outstanding patient care, educating others regarding cystic fibrosis management and looking for treatments of tomorrow by participating in scientific research today.

Pediatric Team
Each team member is passionate about providing our pediatric patients with the most comprehensive and aggressive preventive care possible. We work from a philosophy that maintaining excellent health as a young patient affords the best opportunity for longevity, better quality of life, and opportunities to benefit from new therapeutic discoveries emerging from CF research.

Steven Stites, MDSteven Stites, MD
Cystic Fibrosis Center Program Director
Dr. Stites completed his medical training at the University of Missouri in 1986, residency and Chief Residency at the University of Rochester in 1990 and his fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at The University of Kansas in 1993. He joined the staff in 1993 and started seeing adults with cystic fibrosis shortly thereafter. He helped start the adult CF program in 1995 and became the overall Center Director in 2007. He has also served as the residency program director, Chair of Medicine, and now the Vice-Chancellor of Clinical Affairs and is on the Cystic Fibrosis Center Committee which accredits all CF centers. He feels privileged to work with an outstanding team in the adult clinic who help make sure the care of the over 200 adults is at the forefront. His favorite story in clinic is telling our young adults about all the CF patients over 60 that we follow!

 
Joel Mermis, MDJoel Mermis, MD
Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program Director
Dr. Mermis completed his medical school training at The University of Kansas in 2003. He completed residency and chief residency at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia in 2007 and his fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Kansas in 2010. Following completion of his fellowship, he joined the staff at The University of Kansas Medical Center in 2010, and his passion for CF care has only grown stronger every day since. Dr. Mermis is now the director of the adult CF program and inpatient care unit. He feels very fortunate to work with such a great CF team and take care of patients with cystic fibrosis in this very exciting time. As many new therapies are currently under investigation that will hopefully significantly improve the lives of our patients, he is working hard to support this endeavor by building a very active cystic fibrosis clinical research program at The University of Kansas Hospital.

 
Steven Stites, MDMichael Crosser, MD
Adult Cystic Fibrosis Associate Center Director
Dr. Crosser completed his undergraduate training in 1998 at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. His medical education and six years of residency training were all completed at The University of Kansas in Kansas City, Kansas. He joined the Faculty in 2008 in General Pulmonary and Critical Care. He joined the adult cystic fibrosis program in 2012 and is currently the Assistant Program Director for the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic. Dr. Crosser loves his job and feels very lucky to be a part of the cystic fibrosis community at a very exciting time.

 
Timothy DwyerTimothy Dwyer, MD
Dr. Dwyer began his second career in medicine at The University of Kansas in 1993 and finished in 1997. He completed his residency in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2000 before returning to The University of Kansas to complete his pulmonary and critical care fellowship in 2003 and join the staff. He joined the adult cystic fibrosis team in 2012. He is currently the Associate Division Director of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Dwyer feels privileged to be a part of an outstanding program.

 
Deepika PolineniDeepika Polineni, MD, MPH
Adult Cystic Fibrosis Associate Center Director
Dr. Polineni received her BA and MD at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. She received her MPH at Boston University. She completed residency in internal medicine at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor followed by Post-Doctoral Research training at Washington University in St. Louis. She completed a fellowship in pulmonary medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she developed a focus in CF treatment and research. Dr. Polineni joined our adult CF team in 2014 and continues to spend her time in the clinical care and research of CF. She is very excited to be a part of this team!

 
Amanda BruceAmanda Bruce, PhD 
Dr. Bruce is a clinical psychologist who began her work with the CF team in the spring of 2016. She meets with patients and families when they are in the hospital and schedules outpatient appointments as well. She grew up in the "Little Apple," also known as Manhattan, Kansas. She attended the University of Kansas for a degree in psychology before going to Penn State University for her PhD. She did her internship at the VA Hospital in Boston. Her education eventually came full circle when she moved to Kansas City for a fellowship. Most of her time as a faculty member is spent doing brain imaging and obesity research but she greatly enjoys working with patients. Amanda has been impressed by the fortitude and resilience of the people she has worked with. She looks forward to getting to know more CF patients as her work with the team continues.

Joyce Funk received her Bachelors of Science in nursing from The University of Kansas in 1992, and her Masters of Science in nursing from The University of Kansas as an adult/geriatric nurse practitioner in 1999. She has been employed at The University of Kansas Hospital since 1992, and spent seven years as an inpatient case manager working with individuals with cystic fibrosis prior to joining the outpatient adult cystic fibrosis program in 2004.

 
Cynthia OrscheinCynthia Orscheln RN, BSN
Nurse Coordinator

Cynthia received her Bachelors of Science in nursing from Rockhurst University in 1993 and BS in health sciences from Kansas State University in 1988. After four years of working in the field of management, her professional and personal goals led her to pursue a profession in nursing. She has been employed at The University of Kansas Hospital since 2005 and has been working with the adult cystic fibrosis team since 2011 as Clinical Nurse. She is dedicated to her patients who are affected by this disease and strives to continually improve patient’s experiences and continue to provide quality care through feedback and QI projects.

 
Natalie HollandNatalie Holland RN, BSN

Natalie obtained her Bachelors of Science in nursing from The University of Kansas in 2006 and has been employed at The University of Kansas Hospital ever since. She gained experience as a staff nurse in Orthopedics before transferring to what was to become the current CF Unit. She held the title of Unit Coordinator on the CF Unit before shifting her focus of care to the outpatient setting. She has worked with the CF adult team since 2012.

Tisha received her B.S. degree in kinesiology from Kansas State University in 1994 and her Bachelors of Science in respiratory care from The University of Kansas in 1996. She has been with the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Center since 2007. Her duties include having patients complete spirometry in clinic and providing patient education regarding airway clearance and inhaled therapies.

 
Abby MoogAbby Moog BSW, MSW, LMSW

Abby received her Bachelors of Social Work degree from Ball State University in 2009 and her Masters of Social Work degree with a health care focus from The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2010. Abby is currently in clinical supervision and is working towards obtaining her clinical social work license. Abby has been with the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Center since 2012. Her duties include assisting patients in obtaining and understanding insurance, connecting them with patient assistance programs, and providing access and referrals to resources. She can provide brief counseling services, and/or assist those who are struggling with mental health issues.

Michelle received her Doctorate of Pharmacy at The University of Kansas in 2010 and completed her PGY1 pharmacy residency at The University of Kansas Hospital in 2011. After residency, she cared for pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis during inpatient admissions until joining the Adult and Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Centers in spring of 2016. Her duties include medication reconciliation, medication counseling, medication management and optimization, facilitating transitions of care, medication adherence assessment, and assisting in medication access.

Allison graduated from San Diego State University where she completed her Bachelors of Science degree in Foods and Nutrition in 2013, as well as her Masters of Science degrees in Nutritional Science and Exercise Physiology, finishing in 2016. She completed her dietetic internship at University of Oklahoma Health Science Center before she became a Registered Dietitian in 2014. Allison began her dietetics career working in weight management for two years. She joined The University of Kansas Health System Cystic Fibrosis clinic team in January 2017. She is excited to dedicate her career to helping both adult and pediatric patients where she will find innovative and individualized ways to maximize their unique nutrition needs and goals.

Adam received his Bachelors of Science in biology from Pittsburg State University in 2002 and Masters in Health and Human Services from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Adam has been with the adult cystic fibrosis team since 2012. His duties include managing, recruiting, and enrolling our CF research studies.

Larry received his Bachelor of Arts in healthcare management from Ottawa University in 2004. Larry worked as a nurse from 1992 until 2000 when he began working in Clinical Research. Larry has worked for The University of Kansas Medical Center since 2011 and as a cystic fibrosis research coordinator since July of 2014.

Dr. Lewis graduated from The University of Kansas where he completed both his undergraduate degree in chemistry, as well as medical school. He completed his pediatric residency at The University of Kansas Hospital in Pediatrics where he was also the chief resident. He has been a member of our cystic fibrosis team since 2011 and became the Program Director in 2015. Dr. Lewis enjoys caring for cystic fibrosis patients because of the complexity of their disease and being able to educate the patients and their families on the ever-evolving world of cystic fibrosis medicine.

 
Paul Scharnhorst, RRTPaul Scharnhorst, RRT
Respiratory Therapist
Paul received his B.A. in education in 1977 from the University of Central Washington, A.A.S. degree in respiratory therapy in 1983, and post graduate Respiratory Therapy Residency Certificate of Completion in 1984. Paul started his career working as a staff therapist, worked as a team leader, and also as a shift manager on day shift. Paul has been involved with work in the cystic fibrosis clinic for many years. His duties include having patients complete pulmonary function tests, observing pulse oximetry readings and providing patient education on inhaled medication with airway clearance.

Lyndsay received her Bachelor of Science in nursing from Avila University in 2012. She worked with adult CF patients in the hospital setting before joining the pediatric cystic fibrosis team in 2014. She enjoys getting to work closely with patients and their families and feels fortunate to be working with a great team that is dedicated to providing excellent and well-rounded care to our CF patients and families.

Michelle graduated from The University of Kansas School of Pharmacy and completed her residency at The University of Kansas in 2011. She has worked in the inpatient pharmacies of both the pediatric and PICU units. In 2014, she took on the role of Pharmacy Residency Program Coordinator and joined the adult and pediatric CF teams as Clinical Pharmacist in 2016. She is amazed by the passion of the adult and pediatric cystic fibrosis teams and enjoys getting to know and develop relationships with patients and their families.

Chandra received her Bachelor of Science in Sociology and Women's Studies from Kansas State University in 2000 and her Master of Social Work at The University of Kansas in 2005. Prior to joining the CF team in 2015, she worked extensively in community based health care systems. She has over 15 years of experience in the fields of mental health, youth development, care coordination, program development and facilitation/training.
