KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The University of Kansas Health System is adding three floors above the orthopedics wing of the Medical Office Building to address the rising demand for ambulatory services.

The expansion project, to begin in February 2018, will provide 45,000 square feet of new floor space for physician faculty offices and, later, clinical areas for ambulatory services. Construction on the $25 million project should be completed in summer 2019.

"The new floors will at first provide flexible space for our growing physician faculty and later give us more outpatient exam areas as the ambulatory enterprise grows," says John McDonough, vice president, Facilities and Real Estate Services.

The new floors will also give staff larger and brighter work areas and the latest medical equipment to support the health system's ambulatory strategy of treating illnesses and performing medical procedures more efficiently to shorten inpatient stays.

In early project planning stages, senior executives considered relocating physicians within the main campus and quickly determined there were no available unoccupied spaces. They also decided renovating existing areas in an aged building was cost prohibitive.

The expansions above the orthopedics facility allows the health system to invest in flexible space that will meet immediate needs but adapt to different uses as the organization continues to grow.

This latest construction project follows the health system's Nov. 7 opening of the 11-level Cambridge Tower A. The Indian Creek Campus expansion should be complete in spring 2018.

The architect on the project is CanonDesign; Turner Construction Company is the building contractor.

The Medical Office Building opened in July 2011, with the orthopedics wing following two months later. "This latest expansion supports our mission to shape the future of academic medicine," McDonough says.
