The University of Kansas Health System Forensic Program provides specialized, compassionate care in a safe and supportive environment for individuals affected by violence, abuse or exploitation.

Our team brings expertise in forensic documentation and evidence handling, paired with coordination with community resources to support each patient. We prioritize confidentiality, uphold patient autonomy and treat every person with the utmost respect and dignity.

About the forensic program

Our forensic program clinicians are specially trained to identify injuries related to violence, deliver appropriate medical treatment and collect forensic evidence when needed. Patients can decide whether to include evidence collection as part of their care or involve law enforcement. Regardless of their decision, they will receive compassionate care and support.

About our forensic program services

We provide full-service forensic care at our hospitals at 39th and Rainbow and in Olathe. Our forensic program provides care for individuals affected by:

  • Sexual assault ❨14 and older❩
  • Domestic and intimate partner violence
  • Elder and vulnerable adult abuse or neglect
  • Child abuse or neglect
  • Human trafficking
  • Physical assault
  • Drug-facilitated assault or drugging
  • Strangulation
  • Other forms of violence or exploitation

Our forensic program is staffed by highly trained forensic nurses, who specialize in medical forensic care. Team members maintain advanced education in evidence collection, injury identification and trauma-informed communication. Many hold professional certifications and participate in ongoing training aligned with national best practices.

The forensic nurse will take time to talk with you about your care and well-being. They will explain your options, including medical exams, forensic exams, advocacy support, reporting options and plans to help you feel safe when you leave. The nurse will explain each step before it happens, and you can pause, skip or stop at any time.

You are always in control of what happens. You can choose what feels right for you, and you do not have to do anything that makes you uncomfortable. The forensic nurse is there to support you, answer your questions and respect your decisions.

The exam can take several hours, depending on your needs and pace. The care team will move at a speed that feels comfortable to you.

You can receive medical and forensic care, including a sexual assault exam (rape kit), without making a police report. The forensic nurse will discuss all available options with you so you can make a decision that feels best for you.

You are able to decide if you would like evidence to be collected. The forensic nurse will discuss available options with you so you can make an informed decision.

Evidence is stored securely following strict procedures. Depending on your decision, it may be shared with law enforcement or held anonymously by the state.

If reported to law enforcement, evidence is released to the law enforcement department investigating. From there, the evidence is submitted by law enforcement to the crime lab for testing. The hospital does not test evidence.

You can seek care at any time. Some services, like evidence collection, may be time sensitive, and the forensic nurse will explain your options.
