Our plastic surgery team is proud to offer facelift procedures to patients who wish to correct sagging jowls and folds in the lower face for a more youthful appearance. A facelift can accomplish several cosmetic goals. The procedure:
- Corrects sagging jowls
- Corrects deep nasolabial folds
- Corrects excess facial skin and fat deposits
Would a facelift be right for me?
If you struggle with sagging skin in the lower face, you may be an ideal candidate for a facelift, a procedure undergone by hundreds of thousands of patients in the U.S., according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
The majority of patients who choose to undergo a facelift are 40-60 years old. After surgery, these men and women can look nearly 12 years younger on average and have an improved quality of life and better self-esteem. To benefit from a facelift, you should be a healthy, nonsmoker and have realistic expectations about cosmetic surgery. If you have high blood pressure, blood clotting issues or a tendency to form excessive scars, please notify your plastic surgeon.
How is a facelift performed?
The surgery itself will take 2-3 hours to perform and is commonly done under a local anesthetic. Your plastic surgeon will make incisions above the hairline at the temples and follow the natural contour of your ear and continue behind the earlobe to the lower scalp. If your neck will also be lifted, a small incision will be made under your chin.
After making the incisions, your surgeon will separate the skin from the underlying muscle and fat, trimming and suctioning them to improve contour. Once completed, your surgeon will tighten the underlying tissues and lift the skin using stitches to affix the tissues and close the incisions.
What should I expect after a facelift?
Following your facelift, you should be prepared for up to 3 weeks of recovery time (though it may be considerably shorter, depending on the technique used). Numbness, bruising and swelling can occur, as well as pain, which may be managed with medication prescribed by your surgeon. Activity should be limited and scars will be hidden within your hair. Your plastic surgeon will let you know when you can apply makeup after the procedure.
Possible complications from a facelift may include hematoma, nerve injury, infection or poor healing.
If you exhibit signs of facial aging – if your skin has begun to sag and makes you appear older than you feel – then a facelift may be the right solution for you. We encourage you to contact the plastic surgery team to learn more about this life-changing plastic surgery procedure.
