The University of Kansas Hospital ranked nationally in 9 specialties for the 2018-19 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals listThe University of Kansas Hospital is ranked among the top 1% of hospitals in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2018-19 Best Hospitals list. It is nationally ranked in nine specialties, more than any other hospital in the region.

U.S. News also recognized The University of Kansas Hospital as the "Best Hospital in Kansas" and "Best Hospital in Kansas City." The hospital has received these awards every year they have been presented.

U.S. News rankings are important because they are based on a data-driven analysis of performance measures, including patient outcomes, nursing quality and the range of programs offered in any one specialty. They are also based on program reputation. The goal is to help patients with the most complex conditions find the most advanced care.

The 2018-19 national rankings for The University of Kansas Hospital are:

  • Cancer (#42). Cancer care made the list for the eighth year in a row. It's the only program in the region to earn recognition.

  • Cardiology & Heart Surgery (#24). The program is the highest ranked in Kansas City and the only one in the region to be recognized 12 years in a row.

  • Diabetes & Endocrinology (#18). It's the sixth time the program has made the list.

  • Gastroenterology & GI Surgery (#42). This is the eighth year in a row on the list.

  • Geriatrics (#23). This is the eighth time geriatrics has made the list.

  • Nephrology (kidney) (#39). Nephrology has been on the list nine times.

  • Neurology & Neurosurgery (#31). This specialty was listed for the seventh consecutive year.

  • Pulmonology (#41). Pulmonology was ranked for the ninth year in a row.

  • Urology (#23). Urology made the list for the seventh time.

The hospital is also listed as "high performing" in orthopedics, which means it scored in the top 10% of all hospitals receiving a score in this specialty.

Of the more than 4,500 hospitals evaluated, only 158 ranked in at least one specialty.

"U.S. News rankings are meaningful because they are based on data such as patient survival, advanced technology and patient safety," said Tammy Peterman, MS, RN, FAAN, president, Kansas City operations, and executive vice president, chief operating officer and chief nursing officer of The University of Kansas Health System. "We are honored to be recognized not only as the best hospital in our city and state, but among the best hospitals in the country."

"Kansans should be proud their state's academic medical center is recognized alongside top hospitals like Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins and Mayo Clinic for quality care," said Bob Page, president and chief executive officer of The University of Kansas Health System. "No one wants to think about being treated for a serious illness, but it should be comforting to know the very best care is available here in Kansas when you or someone you love needs us."
