Helping Patients in Need

December 13, 2019

Thanks to those who support The University of Kansas Health System, we are able to make a difference in the lives of thousands of patients in the Kansas City region and throughout Kansas. Here, some of our supporters share why they chose to give to our health system.

Mary and Mike Oberg

As graduates of the University of Kansas in the 1970s (Mary from the School of Nursing and Mike from the School of Engineering), we were familiar with The University of Kansas Health System. But when Mary was diagnosed with breast cancer 5 years ago, we learned about The University of Kansas Cancer Center. She had 7 surgeries, 2 rounds of chemotherapy and one round of radiation. We are eternally grateful for the specialized care we received.

During this time, we realized the difficulties for patients who struggle financially. We created a patient-in-need fund to help others with expenses not typically covered by insurance. No one should have to worry about out-of-pocket expenses when they’re battling cancer.

I have 9 friends who are dealing with breast cancer. That's why I'm contributing to the nurse navigation program at The University of Kansas Cancer Center. Nurse navigators ease the fear and confusion. They shepherd each patient through the process, explaining what’s happening and connecting patients with the right specialist at the right time.

As a member of the Advancement Board, I have learned so much about The University of Kansas Health System. The organization has excellent leadership, with everyone focused on transforming the health system through new and enhanced programs. I'm so proud to have this amazing healthcare system right here in Kansas City.
