For over 100 years, we have been a leader in eye care and vision health. It’s what we do. It’s what we love. We don’t race against the clock or measure our expertise by numbers. Quality and accurate care takes time, something we will never compromise. With experts in all subspecialty areas, patients can be evaluated and treated for multiple issues in one compassionate setting.

Optometrist (OD) or Ophthalmologist (MD)?pre-op

Patients often ask if they should see an optometrist or an ophthalmologist. If you have no current medical concerns with your eyes and are in need of an annual eye exam or prescription, then an optometrist may be for you.

If, however, you have current medical concerns or diagnoses, an ophthalmologist may be better suited to evaluate your vision as it relates to your overall health

What to expect at your first eye appointment
  • Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time to complete paperwork
  • Bring with you:
    • insurance card
    • photo ID
    • co-pay
    • list of current medications
    • any relevant medical records (or fax to 913-588-6655 or mail to 7400 State Line Rd., Prairie Village, KS 66208)
At your appointment time, one of our caring technicians will call your name and measure your height, weight and blood pressure. They will then check your vision and perform various vision tests, as determined by your reason for being seen, so the results may be reviewed by your provider(s). As an academic institution, we train new doctors and you may see more than one doctor during your visit with us. Rest assured, this only increases the level of care you receive, but may take slightly longer overall. If you are seeing one of our ophthalmic subspecialists for a medical issue, please allow 1 to 2 hours for your appointment.

New patients should plan on being dilated. Dilation can last 2-4 hours after your visit, so you will want to make sure and have sunglasses available! (We also have temporary sunglasses, if needed). If you find that you are particularly sensitive to dilation, please be sure to have transportation pre-arranged.

If you or your loved one has special needs, please be sure to have someone accompany them and remain with them for their appointment. This is especially important, so that the physician can have a broader picture of needs and to ensure questions are answered and the treatment plan is fully understood.

If seeing our neuro-ophthalmologist, Thomas J. Whittaker, MD, please ensure your referring physician has provided us a referral and your medical records via fax at 913-588-6655.

Prescriptions, Payment and Vision Insurance:

If needing a prescription for glasses or contact lenses, a refraction will be performed for a charge of $75. If paid the same day as your appointment, we reduce the refraction charge to $37.50. Depending on your insurance, this fee is in addition to your co-pay and deductible. We recommend that you check with your insurance provider before your appointment to see if refraction (code: 92015) is a covered charge under your plan.

If you have a vision plan in addition to your medical insurance and would like to use your vision benefits, please indicate when scheduling or when you arrive, so we can ensure you see one of our optometrists, Dr. Dirck DeKeyser or Dr. Mallory Kuchem. If the vision plan is not under your name, you will be asked to provide the first and last name, social security number and date of birth of the vision plan primary account holder to authorize your visit. Typically, vision plans cover the cost of an annual visit, refraction, and an allowance towards the purchase of glasses or contact lenses.

Thank you for choosing us. We look forward to seeing you!
