Prenatal Labs and Vaccinations


First trimester

  • CBC (blood count)
  • HIV
  • Hepatitis B
  • Syphilis
  • Rubella
  • Blood type & antibody screen
  • Urinalysis
  • Optional testing
    • Nuchal translucency (NT) screen
    • Genetic carrier screening
    • Hemoglobin electrophoresis

Second trimester

  • Ultrasound/anatomy scan, 20-22 weeks
  • Diabetes (glucose) testing, hemoglobin & hematocrit, blood type & antibody screen, syphilis, 24-28 weeks
  • Optional testing
    • MSAFP or quad screen, 15-22 weeks (testing to screen for genetic disorders, e.g. Down syndrome, or neural tube defects, e.g. spina bifida)

Third trimester

  • GBS, approximately 35-37 weeks


Recommended vaccines:

  • Flu vaccine – for all pregnant patients between October through April
  • Rhogram (given if blood type is Rh negative), 28 weeks and after birth, if indicated
  • Tdap vaccine for pertussis (whooping cough), 27-36 weeks
