Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Services

Patients who have had a traumatic injury, a debilitating disease or certain types of surgery may need acute inpatient rehabilitation with an intensive, multidisciplinary approach. At The University of Kansas Health System, we offer leading-edge rehabilitation services in state-of-the-art facilities in Kansas City and Overland Park to help patients improve function, decrease pain and regain their independence.

Our doctors work with each patient and their families to help set personalized goals for functional restoration after a major illness or injury.

We specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation – a medical field that uses personally selected rehabilitation techniques to help you meet your specific recovery goals.

Every service offered in our new inpatient facility has been developed for one reason: to help you regain your mobility and independence.

Who we care for

Unlike outpatient physical rehabilitation, which does not require a hospital stay, people who require acute inpatient rehabilitation are admitted to the hospital. To be eligible for this type of therapy, you must be diagnosed by a physician as having a condition  that requires acute rehabilitation.

We often treat people who have or have experienced the following:

  • Heart problems
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Neurological issues
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Stroke
  • Trauma or burn
  • Amputation
  • Musculoskeletal/orthopedic surgery
  • Traumatic brain injury

The latest in acute inpatient care

Our inpatient acute rehabilitation facility features a wide range of patient amenities:

  • Large, inviting visitor lounge with comfortable seating and a fireplace
  • Homelike patient dining room where patients can enjoy the company of others, including a kitchen and laundry to help patients prepare for self-care at home.
  • Fully equipped rehabilitation gym
  • Transitional apartment that allows patients the opportunity to practice their independent living skills before returning home

What to expect

Individuals who require therapy for acute conditions benefit from clinical expertise and collaboration among specialists. These patients receive intensive care to help them transition back to daily life, including:
  • 3 hours of intense therapy at least 5 days a week.
  • Care team members meet weekly to discuss progress and barriers to successful outcomes, and then report back to patients and caregivers.
  • Family and caregivers are encouraged to participate in therapy and educational sessions to learn more about their loved one's care.
  • Patients may stay at an onsite training apartment equipped with a kitchen and bathroom before discharge. This allows patients to practice all aspects of daily routine with the support of our care team.
  • Before discharge, patients have a chance to practice all skills they have learned and perform personal care as independently as possible as they celebrate progress. Family and friends are encouraged to attend.
  • As our patients and their family members prepare to transition to post-acute care or for continued services in the community, we partner with preferred providers to make sure patients receive the help they need each step of the way.
