The day of your procedure

At the surgery center

Please register at the front desk when you arrive at the KU MedWest Outpatient Surgery Center. We will escort you to the pre-operative area and take your blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respiration.

Your anesthesiologist and surgeon will talk to you before your procedure. Depending on the type of procedure, we may provide you a surgical gown to wear.

After your procedure, you'll rest in our recovery area until you're ready to go home. You may have visitors, and you may be able to have something to eat or drink.

Identification and insurance

Have your driver’s license or identification card and health insurance cards or forms with you. Be prepared to pay your co-insurance, deductible or co-pay.

Personal hygiene

Bathe or shower the night before or the morning of your procedure and brush your teeth that morning.

Bring a list of all medications you are currently taking, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins and supplements, along with their dosages.

Wear comfortable, loose, foldable clothing that will be easy to put on after your procedure. Include warm socks and low-heeled shoes.

Makeup and jewelry

Leave your valuables at home. Do not wear jewelry, including body-piercing jewelry. Do not wear makeup, dark-colored fingernail polish or contact lenses.

Please limit visitors to one or two. If possible, leave small children with family members or friends.

Personal items

Bring containers for any personal items such as glasses, dentures, contact lenses or hearing aids. If applicable, bring your crutches or walker.
