Prepare for your procedure

Plan ahead

Learn how to make your visit to the KU MedWest Outpatient Surgery Center as comfortable and convenient as possible.

Because you won't be able to drive after your procedure, be sure to make arrangements for a relative or friend to drive you home. If you use a taxi service, you must be accompanied by an adult who can help you.

Food and drink

Do not eat any solid food after midnight unless otherwise instructed by your nurse. This includes gum, hard candies or mints. Your nurse will give you instructions regarding liquids.

On the morning of your procedure, you may take your heart, blood pressure, respiratory or seizure medication with a sip of water. If you take diabetic medication (pills or insulin shots), the nurse will tell you how to take your medication the day of your procedure. If you use an inhaler or CPAP machine, please bring it with you the day of your procedure.

Children who are patients

On the day of your child’s procedure, bring his or her favorite toy or blanket. For toddlers, be sure to bring items such as diapers, bottles and extra underwear.

Parents or guardians are required to stay with children throughout their procedure. Legal guardians must have proof of guardianship.

Children who are visitors

Children may not be left alone or unsupervised in the waiting room, and are not permitted in restricted areas, such as procedure suites. If possible, ask family members or friends to watch your children.
