Men's Health

On average, men have a shorter life expectancy than women. This is partly due to poor health education and a lack of preventive healthcare. There is also an issue of unhealthy behavior and more dangerous behavior. There is a sense of denial and indestructibility that seems to be more prevalent in men than women. Somehow it is not "manly" to be vulnerable and to ask for help. But it is not always possible to just "work through the pain or illness." Men must protect themselves through knowledge, preventive healthcare and early diagnoses of disease.

We are committed to advancing Men's Health. This mission has also been adopted on a national level by the American Urological Association, or AUA, with the Men’s Health Initiative.

Our physicians are specialists in different aspects of men's health, including adolescents, reproduction, testicular cancer and sexual health, as well as male incontinence and male urological cancers such as prostate cancer.

The American Urological Association has created a checklist of important men's health issues that should be monitored from the time a young man becomes an adult. This highlights issues beyond the genito-urinary parts of the body. It also involves heart care, gastro-intestinal care and emotional/psychiatric well-being, e.g., depression and anxiety. Common problems that men suffer from include:

  • Sexual dysfunction – erectile problems, penile curvature and ejaculatory problems
  • Low testosterone – effect on libido, erectile function and general men's health
  • Sexually transmitted diseases – need for the practice of safe sex
  • Issues with male contraception – reversible to irreversible, like vasectomy
  • Reproductive problems – male infertility to fertility preservation prior to cancer treatment
  • Prostate health – prostatitis to prostate growth
  • Prostate cancer
  • Heart health
  • Testicular cancer – early detection to treatment
  • Emotional well-being – stress management, sleep deprivation, depression/anxiety
  • Substance abuse – smoking/chew/drugs, alcohol and illicit drugs
  • Colon cancer screening

All these issues are important for men to maintain good health and hopefully live a long life.
