Module 4 of 5

In this module you will learn how to successfully monitor your asthma symptoms. You will also learn how the Wright Peak Flow Meter can be a very useful tool in the self-management of your asthma. The combination of symptom monitoring and the use of your Peak Flow Meter will help you control your asthma. Learning the proper use of your Peak Flow Meter is a great way to detect how much swelling you may have in your airways due to your asthma.

You must pay close attention to your body in order to know when your asthma control may be getting worse. If you become good at monitoring your symptoms you will be able to increase your chance that you will not have a major asthma flare-up. Pay close attention to these asthma symptoms:

Chest tightness, wheezing, coughing, unusual shortness of breath, waking up at night due to cough or shortness of breath, itchy throat or increasing use of your quick relief medication (bronchodilator).

If you experience any of these symptoms, make sure you're checking your peak flow meter number. If your symptoms and peak flow number is getting worse, you will need to make adjustments on your medications or call your doctor.
