Emergency Services

The help you need, when you need it

The University of Kansas Hospital is the region’s only nationally verified Level I Trauma Center. As a result, we offer the fastest and most advanced emergency care available: in most cases, our trauma patients leave the Emergency Department within 30 minutes.

This level of treatment is crucial because these cases are complex; delays can be fatal. With extensive experience and training – and state-of-the-art equipment to back them up – the physicians and nurses in our emergency and trauma departments are the ones you want on your side during the golden hour – that first 60 minutes following trauma or injury. Patients who receive treatment during that brief window have the best chance of recovery.

In addition, our Center for Advanced Heart Care ensures that patients experiencing chest pain, heart rhythm disorders and stroke emergencies have instant access to a full range of treatment options, including the best cardiovascular, endovascular, cardiothoracic and vascular care in the region. The center includes a state-of-the-art cardiovascular hybrid suite, which combines technologies to allow physicians to move safely and quickly from catheteriuzation procedures like angioplasty to more invasive surgeries when necessary.

Because we understand the stress of an emergency room visit, our facilities enhance the comfort of those who come in for care and those who bring them. Our goal is to reduce waiting, provide fast assessment, ensure pain relief if needed and then focus on treatment options that lead to full recovery.

From our Regional Heart Attack Center to our nationally recognized Primary Stroke Center, we know the faster you receive care, the faster you can be on the road to recovery. And for pediatric emergency care and emergency nursing care, we are the region’s best choice.

ED entrance and parking

For ambulances and patient drop-off, use the driveway marked “Emergency” on the south side of 39th Avenue, west of Cambridge Street. The ED entrance is at the top of the ramp. Take the ramp down to the lower level where limited visitor parking is available.

You can also park in the Cambridge Parking Garage across from the hospital’s main entrance. To enter the ED, go through the main entrance, turn right, and go to the far end of the Center for Advanced Heart Care.
