About the Grant

The University of Kansas Health System was one of 39 organizations nationwide to receive a Health Care Innovation Award from the CMS Innovation Center in July. The $12.5 million grant is funding the development of a new healthcare delivery and payment model to be implemented in rural northwest Kansas, with the goal of saving lives and reducing healthcare expenses in the region.

The grant program challenges healthcare organizations to implement “the most compelling new ideas” to deliver better health, improved care and lower costs to people enrolled in Medicare, Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program, particularly those with the highest healthcare needs.

CMS considered more than a 1,000 applications. The grant awarded to The University of Kansas Health System was the seventh-largest.
