Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Improving Treatment

Advanced musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging is an exciting injury assessment technique that has improved the care of patients. Musculoskeletal ultrasound is effective in improving care of patients with a variety of musculoskeletal injuries. Our rehabilitation medicine physicians are specially trained in using musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging to deliver therapies to the locations where they are most likely to help.

How is it used?

Musculoskeletal ultrasound is an injury assessment technique that uses sound waves to create images of parts of the body, such as tendons, ligaments, nerves, muscles and bursae. This helps to provide visible, high-resolution images without using radiation or causing patients further discomfort.

What is it used for?

  • within the muscles, bursae and joints

  • Tears or soft-tissue masses
  • Rotator cuff, Achilles tendon

What are its advantages?

Musculoskeletal ultrasound gives many exciting advantages to patients, including:

  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound improves accuracy of treatments, such as for muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and nerves. Patients find it is very helpful to see these areas of their body and to better understand their pain and reasons for rehabilitation recommendations.

  • The cost of ultrasound is much lower than MRI and does not require a separate appointment.

  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound allows detailed images of areas of the body, providing both physicians and patients with an optimal view of the injured body part.
  • Unlike MRI testing, ultrasound shows the musculoskeletal system in motion, allowing pain with motion to be directly evaluated. In addition, patients are able to obtain direct feedback from the physician during and after the testing.

  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound is available in clinics, scans are quick and efficient.

  • Ultrasound imaging is safe, noninvasive and comfortable for patients. Ultrasound involves no radiation, making the test safer for patients.
