Steve Hancock, chair
Steve is vice president of project development for U.S. Engineering Company, responsible for the Midwest region. He graduated from Rockhurst University and has served the mechanical construction industry for more than 32 years. He and his wife, Karen, have two daughters.
"My wife, Karen, is a 12-year breast cancer survivor," he said. "When she was diagnosed, our girls were 7 and 10. We didn't have the psychological or social support network needed for our daughters to help us navigate a very troubling and emotional time for them. When I learned of Turning Point, I wanted their unique services to become well known and supported by our company so that others would have what we didn't have. They wouldn't walk the cancer road alone."
Jane Sosland, PhD, secretary
Jane is a clinical associate professor in pediatrics at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She received a doctorate in developmental and child psychology from the University of Kansas in 1996 and completed a residency and post-doctoral fellowship in child psychology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Jane specializes in the evaluation and treatment of a variety of behavioral and emotional disorders in children and adolescents, including anxiety, depression, ADHD and other behavioral concerns. She also runs a multidisciplinary clinic for children with obesity.
"I've been involved in Turning Point since it began in 2000," she said. "I have a special interest in helping children who have a parent with a chronic illness, since I went through breast cancer when my children were young, and there were no such services at that time.
Sarah Henshaw Baum
Sarah most recently was development officer at the Kansas City CARE Clinic. She currently volunteers throughout the community, serving on the KCUR Community Advisory Board, the Truman Medical Center Foundation Board and the Society of Fellows Board of Directors at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. She has raised both funds and awareness for many other Kansas City nonprofit organizations.
Sarah earned a master's degree in business administration from The University of Chicago and a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of California – Berkeley. She and her husband, Jon, enjoy vacations and holiday time with their four adult children.
"We're all a step away from a life-changing event, or new normal," she said. "The services Turning Point delivers help folks live their definition of a good life in times of huge uncertainty, stress and fear. Hope ripples, from one person or one family, through neighborhoods and towns. It's my good fortune to spread the word about this valuable organization."
April Long
April has worked in Kansas City's real estate brokerage services for both retail and investment property for more than 30 years, representing a variety of regional and national clients. In addition to Turning Point, April has supported the Children's Place, St. Paul's Episcopal Day School and Pembroke Hill High School.
"I've witnessed the impact Turning Point has had on the lives of participants firsthand," she said. "And I feel passionately that Turning Point is a much-needed entity in our community."
Stefanie Montgomery
Stefanie is the founder and managing partner of Montgomery Ink, LLC, where she leverages her extensive experience in strategic planning, acquisition implementation and marketing. She earned a bachelor’s degree in International Finance from New England College in New Hampshire and an MBA from The American Graduate School of International Management at Arizona State University.
Stefanie is passionate about wellness and volunteers for a variety of cancer-focused organizations. She's excited to be a part of the Turning Point leadership team.
Shannon Thrun
Shannon has worked in public relations, marketing, commercial sales and human resources. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Iowa. With three school-aged daughters, she's very active as a volunteer at Visitation Catholic School and the Carriage Club.
"I decided to become part of the board because I like all of the various programs," she said. "I especially like the support offered for the family as well as the individual who is ill. Turning Point is unique and always developing new ways to help people. The staff is amazing and dedicated – they're people with innovative ideas who you want to support and help fund."
