Brain and Spine Trauma

We provide around-the-clock care for patients who have suffered a head or spinal cord injury, from admission through rehabilitation and follow-up care.

As the only American College of Surgeons' nationally accredited Level I Trauma Center in the region within 125 miles, The University of Kansas Health System offers the most comprehensive care available for brain and spinal trauma patients and complex, multi-system injuries. This is the American College of Surgeons' highest designation for trauma care.

Patients who have suffered a head injury or spinal cord injury are brought to the trauma bay where a comprehensive workup is started. Neurosurgeons work closely with trauma surgeons to care for the entire patient.

We have an entire team of nurses and other staff who have specialized training in trauma care. In addition, a dedicated Trauma Care Coordinator is assigned to each case to help ensure a smooth flow of care for patients and their families, from their arrival through discharge and follow-up care.

As part of the region's leading academic medical center, the Trauma Center also offers patients access to physicians in more than 200 specialties that may be needed for treatment and recovery.

Patients who are critically injured or ill may be eligible to take part in national trials, and may benefit from original research conducted by our physicians and scientists.
