Patient Information

What to expect on your first visit

Patients come to The University of Kansas Health System from a seven-state region for the expertise and counsel of our doctors. On your first visit to the health system, you can expect to receive a full battery of neurological testing. These tests will likely include an EMG, in which electrodes are attached to a muscle either through the skin or on the surface of your skin.

How to prepare

It is important that patients visiting the health system for the first time are prepared to spend most of the day, due to the nature of the tests that will be performed. Between tests, you may leave the hospital and spend time with your family.

  • Physician referrals
The University of Kansas Health System welcomes new patients who are referred by other physicians from throughout the area. To refer a patient, call 913-588-5862. Download the physician referral form.
  • Patient self-referrals
We also encourage prospective patients to contact us directly. We know how important it is to determine if your symptoms are related to ALS, and we want to remove the barriers to your receiving a diagnosis and treatment. To request an appointment, call 913-588-1227.

New patient packet

Before your first visit to the health system, it’s a good idea to fill out forms that include your health history and insurance information. We will provide new patients and their families with literature explaining ALS, living with the disease and increasing the quality of life.
